Apparently Cambodians idolize Korean and Chinese fashion and beauty, which would explain why most of the facial products that are for sale here contain skin lightening chemicals. It is so extremely ironic to have been in America a week ago where members of my own family use skin tanning lotion to be here in Cambodia where the Cambodians do what they can to make their skin lighter. They think Westerners are crazy for not protecting our skin from the sun (lest we lose our beautiful whiteness!!).
It’s a little scary to me how different cultures dictate the rules of fashion and beauty so strongly. What if it actually meant something to Cambodian women to know that Western women want skin like theirs, and visa versa? To someone you are beautiful whether you know it or not.
